Why buy this $1 Gold 1855 Type 2 Indian Princess?

This $1 Gold Indian Princess Type 2 comes from the second of only two issues of the coin. Coins of this type can be quite difficult to find, not only because they were issued for just two years, but also because many pieces were melted down in the ensuing years. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1.67 g of .900 fine gold, this coin is part of a mintage of just 758,269 pieces. It is distinguished from the Type 1 by having a slightly larger diameter of 15mm as opposed to 13mm.

Striking Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by James Longacre. It bears his Indian Princess design, which consists of a young woman wearing a feathered headdress. Longacre modeled the figure, who has long, curly hair, after Venus Accroupie, a marble figure. Her effigy is encircled by an inscription, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

The reverse design centers around two inscriptions, the face value, "1 DOLLAR," and the date, "1855." They are encircled by a wreath made of cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco.

Beautifully Maintained AU53

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) awarded this coin a grade of About Uncirculated 53. That means that it has only slight wear and retains full details, save for some minor softness on the high points.

Don't miss your chance to own this Type 2 1855 $1 Gold Indian Princess.
