Why order this 1855 Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess?

1855 saw the second and final issue of the Type 2 Gold Dollar. Its short run, and the fact that many pieces were melted down within just a few years of being issued makes this coin a true find for the discerning collector. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 1.67 g planchet of .900 fine gold, this coin was part of a mintage of 758,269 pieces. The Type 2 differs from the Type 1 in that the diameter has been enlarged from 13mm to 15mm.

Classic Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

James Longacre's Indian Princess design features on the obverse. The young figure, whom Longacre modeled off of the marble figure Venus Accroupie, is depicted in left-side profile. She has long hair and wears a headpiece that includes several feathers. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the image.

On the reverse, a wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat encircles a pair of inscriptions. Those inscriptions offer the coin's face value, "1 DOLLAR," and date, 1855."

Well Preserved AU53

This coin received an About Uncirculated 53 grade from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it retains complete details and has no more than slight wear. Given the scarcity not only of this issue but of Type 2 Gold Dollars, an AU53 piece is a very appealing option.
