This 1855 dated coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint is of the Upright 55 variety. Total mintage of the 1855 release is reported to be 1,574,829, the second lowest of the series. Braided Hair Cent Design by Christian GobrechtLady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," with her hair delicately styled in a braid above her brow. The portrait is encircled by thirteen six-pointed stars and the date of issue "1855." The reverse features a wreath of laurel with "ONE CENT" inscribed at the center, surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Exceptional Mint State 65This 1855 Braided Hair Large Cent was submitted to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) for review and authenticated as an Upright 55 variety. Possessing a sharp strike and fantastic eye appeal, the coin was deemed to be in Mint State 65 condition. As of January 2019, just 70 examples from the total mintage have received this grade, with only 15 graded higher! The coin's beautiful milk chocolate-like color is enhanced with reddish hues, earning the additional designation of "BN" from PCGS.
