Why purchase this 1854 $1 Gold Indian Princess Type 2?

This Gold Indian Princess comes from the first of just three mintages of Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess coins, making it a prime target for collectors looking for a type set. The coin measures 15 mm, which makes it larger than its Type 1 counterpart. It was part of a mintage of 783,953 pieces of its kind from the Philadelphia Mint in 1854. It was struck from 1.67 g of .900 fine gold.

Distinguished Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

On the obverse, which, like the reverse, was designed by James Longacre, is a left-side portrait of a young woman. Longacre modeled her on Venus Accroupie a Roman marble figure that was on display in a Philadelphia museum at the time. She wears a feathered headdress on which the feathers stand upright. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed along the rim.

On the reverse, a closed wreath encircles three short lines of inscriptions that together read, "1 DOLLAR 1854." This is a departure from the open wreath on the Type 1 version. The wreath is made of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat.

Uncirculated MS61

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) awarded this coin a Mint State 61 grade. Coins must not have any signs of wear to qualify for that grade.
