Why purchase this 1854 Type 2 $1 Gold Indian Princess?

The Type 2 Gold Dollar is a special coin in American history in that it was only minted for two years, including just part of 1854. The Type 2 was introduced to make the diameter of the Gold Dollar larger, while it was replaced with the Type 3 to eliminate production problems caused by the design. Like other gold dollars, it was struck on a 1.67 g planchet of .900 fine gold. The Philadelphia Mint produced 783,943 of these in 1854.

Beloved Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

James Longacre's obverse design gives the coin its name, "Indian Princess," but he modeled the figure off of a Roman marble statue, Venus Accroupie. She is shown in left-side profile wearing a feathered headdress. Her likeness is encircled by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

On the reverse, a wreath encircles a pair of inscriptions. The wreath is made from cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat, while the inscriptions read, "1 DOLLAR," and "1854."

Beautifully Preserved AU50

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) gave this coin an About Uncirculated grade. That grade indicates that a coin has full details outside of some minor softness on the high points.
