Why buy this 1854 $1 Gold Indian Princess Type 2?

For collectors looking for a type coin to represent the series of Indian Princess dollars, this piece is a fantastic option. It comes from the first of just three issues of Type 2 coins. It has a larger diameter and is thinner than its predecessor. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 1.67 g planchet of .900 fine gold, the coin was part of a mintage of 783,953 pieces.

Unique Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

James Longacre designed both the obverse and reverse. The obverse features a young woman wearing a feathered headdress. Longacre used Venus Accroupie, a statue that was then on display in a Philadelphia museum, as his model for the woman. The only rim inscription reads, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

The face value, "1 DOLLAR," and date, "1854," are inscribed at the center of the reverse. They are encircled by a closed wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat. The wreath was open on the Type 1 version.

Well Maintained MS61

This coin earned a Mint State 61 grade from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To earn such a grade, a coin must not have any signs of wear.
