Why order this Type 2 1854 $1 Gold Indian Princess?

The 1854 $1 Gold Indian Princess Type 2 was the first of just two issues of the Type 2 piece, making it a true find for collectors. Mint State examples are quite scarce given that the coin was used more in commerce than as a store of value, so this AU58 piece is rather attractive. It was one of 783,953 pieces of its kind struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 1.67 g of .900 fine gold.

Scarce Small Head Design by James B. Longacre

Both faces of this coin were designed by James B. Longacre. On the obverse is an Indian princess, Longacre likely used Venus Accroupie, a Roman marble figure that was in Philadelphia at the time, as his model for the figure. A larger head was used for the Type 3 coins. The princess dons a feathered headdress. Her left-side effigy is encircled by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

The reverse is centered on inscriptions of the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," and date, "1854." They are encircled by a wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat.

Well Preserved AU58

This coin earned an Almost Uncirculated grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it does not have any wear aside from the highest points and that it retains full details.
