Why buy this Type 2 1854 $1 Gold Indian Princess?

Few American coins that were issued for circulation are as unique as the Type 2 Gold Dollar. The Type 2 piece was only issued in two years, including just part of 1854. It has a diameter of 15mm, which is 2mm larger than the Type 1. What's more is that many of these coins did not survive melting - it's a fate that many of them met within just a few years of their issue. That makes this AU50 piece all the more appealing. Like other Gold Dollars, it was struck from 1.67 g of .900 fine gold. It was one of 783,943 pieces of its kind produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1854.

Striking Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

Venus Accroupie served as James Longacre's obverse design. Longacre depicts a young woman with curly hair in left-side profile. The Indian Princess name comes from the fact that the figure is wearing a feathered headdress. The effigy is encircled by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

The coin's face value, "1 DOLLAR," and its date, "1854," are inscribed at the center of the reverse. They are encircled by a wreath that is made from four staple American crops, corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat.

Well Preserved AU50

According to the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this coin is in About Uncirculated 50 condition. That means that it still has full details save for some minor softness, which is limited to the high points.
