Why buy this 1853 Silver Seated Liberty Arrows and Rays Half Dollar?

The Seated Liberty half dollar was issued from 1839-1891, but this 1853 edition was the only one to have both arrows and rays, making it an essential part of any Seated Liberty half dollar collection. Both features were added to make the new half dollars easily distinguishable from the old ones after the discovery of gold in California wreaked havoc on the bi-metallic monetary standard. New silver coins smaller than the dollar were reduced in size by about seven percent. Part of a mintage of 3,532,708 pieces, this coin was struck from 12.44 g of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.

Iconic Seated Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht

Both faces of this coin were designed by Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, a seated Liberty faces the left side of the coin, while her shoulders are open to the right side of the holder. In her left hand, she balances a staff upon which a Liberty cap sits. With her right hand, she balances a shield. The date, "1853," is inscribed at the bottom with arrowheads on either side of it, while thirteen stars arch over the image.

On the reverse, a union shield covers the chest of an eagle, which guards it. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. Rays stretch out in all directions from behind the bird. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR."
