Why does this 1853 Liberty Head Gold $1 coin belong in your collection?
The first dollar denomination gold coin series issued by the United States Mint was the Type 1 Liberty Head series, released for a period of only six years, from 1849 until 1854. This particular issue was struck in 1853, offering an interesting tie to America's history. 1853 was the year Levi Strauss & Co was founded, the year Franklin Pierce was inaugurated at the 14th President of the United States, just two months after a tragic train accident in which his only child was killed. It was this year the United States purchased 30,000 square miles of land from Mexico to establish railroad building in the Southwest. Now you can bring a piece of American history home to you collection!
Measuring a scant 13 mm in diameter, the coin also holds a place in history as the Mint's smallest ever gold coin. This 1853 Liberty Head Gold Dollar containing 0.0484 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, its final mintage reported to be 4,076,051 coins.
