Why add this 1852 Liberty Head Gold Dollar coin to your collection?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Liberty Head Gold Dollar, its first-ever circulating gold coin with a one dollar denomination, in 1849. The Liberty Head style, known as the Type I design, was issued for only six years. The Liberty Head Gold Dollar is the smallest coin to be produced in the entirety of the U.S. Mint's history, featuring a diameter of just 13 mm.

  • This Liberty Head Gold Dollar was struck at the Mint's facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • The coin is minted with 0.0484 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The coin is part of a 2,045,351 piece mintage.

Stunning Patriotic Imagery

Obverse: The concept of American Liberty is personified as a young woman on the obverse, her hair partially gathered and held in place with a "LIBERTY" inscribed, beaded headband. The image is encircled by thirteen stars to commemorate the nation's thirteen original colonies.

Reverse: The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounded by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," with the coin's denomination and year of issue "1 DOLLAR 1852" located at the center. Design of the Liberty Head Gold Dollar is credited to James Barton Longacre, an American portrait artist who served as the Mint's fourth Chief Engraver from 1844 until 1869.
