Why buy this $10 Gold 1838-1907 Liberty Head?

President Thomas Jefferson stopped the production of Gold Eagles in 1804, and production didn't resume until 1838. That makes the series particularly important in American history. This Liberty Head edition replaced the Draped Bust version. It was struck from 16.72 g of .900 fine gold. When you order from this page, you will receive a $10 Gold Eagle from any time during the run of the series, 1838-1907. In 1866, the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," was added to the coin. This motto may or may not appear on your piece(s). All coins ordered from this page will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Striking Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht

Both faces of this coin bear the designs of Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty that he based on a portrait of Venus that appears in Omnia Vincit Amor (Love Conquers All), a painting by Benjamin West. Liberty dons a coronet that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Her hair is held back save for a few curls, which fall down her neck. Along the rim are thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, and the coin's date.

On the reverse, an eagle protects a union shield. The bird spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values and a preference for peace. Later versions of the coin include a ribbon that bears the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" above the eagle's head. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "TEN D."
