Why purchase this 1819/8 Silver Capped Bust Half Dollar?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Capped Bust Silver Half Dollar series in 1807. In 1819, three major varieties were produced, identifiable by the appearance of the date: a normal date, and two over-date issues, one with a "Large 9," the other with a "Small 9," in which the underlying "8" is clearly visible. This 1819/8 Silver Capped Bust Half Dollar is an example of the "Small 9" variety, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 0.3868 Troy oz. of .8924 fine silver.

Capped Bust Design by John Reich

The obverse features a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty with long curling hair, wearing a Phrygian cap and a headband bearing the inscription "LIBERTY," surrounded by thirteen starts and "1819."

Illustrated on the reverse is an eagle behind a patriotically striped shield, clutching three arrows and an olive branch, with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" inscribed on a curved banner above. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "50 C."

Very Fine Silver Half Dollar

This 1819/8 Capped Bust Silver Half Dollar coin was graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be Very Fine (VF30). The circulated half dollar coin is evenly worn and flattened, possessing full, sharp lettering and moderate definition of design elements. The coin is presented in a NGC protective holder, with a label identifying it as part of the Stack's W. 57th St. Collection.
