Why add this GEM Proof 1795-2020 2 oz. Silver Capped Bust Proof Medal to your collection?
The Capped Bust Half Eagle series introduced in 1795, designed by the U.S. Mint's first Chief Engraver Robert Scot, was the first ever American gold coinage series. In honor of the series' 225th Anniversary, the Smithsonian has authorized the production of commemorative proof medals minted with the original designs. This 45 mm diameter medal was struck by the Commonwealth Mint from 2 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver, its mintage limited to just 1,500.
Breathtaking Patriotic Imagery
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse facing right, with her long wavy hair held in place by a tall Phrygian cap. The fifteen states in the union in 1795 are represented by fifteen six-pointed stars, which are divided by the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "1975-2020."
A bald eagle is featured on the reverse beside the Smithsonian sun logo, with a laurel wreath in its beak. The national bird grasps an olive branch, which includes an assayer mark and "999" upon one of the leaves. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
