Why add this Copper Half-Penny struck for Great Britain's King George III to your collection of historic coinage?
The ruler of Great Britain from 1760-1820 was George III. The copper half-penny bearing his image was minted for only eight out of those sixty years, from 1770-1775, 1799 and 1806. George's reign was characterized by conflict, including the American War of Independence, which by virtue of losing earned him the moniker of the "Last King of America." The half-penny was struck from copper, and measures approximately 30 mm in diameter.
Seated Britannia Design Created by German Engraver Conrad Kuchler
The reverse features Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, seated on a rock facing left with waves below. She is portrayed holding an olive branch and spear or trident, with a patriotic shield at her side. "BRITANNIA" curves above, meaning "of Britain."
The laureate, draped, right facing portrait of George III adorns the obverse. The image is surrounded by a Latin legend that translates as "George the Third by the Grace of God, King," inscribed as "GEORGIUS III D: G. REX," with the date below.
