Why purchase this Genuine Circulated 1640 Netherlands New York Lion Dollar?

Originally inspired by the Bohemian Joachimsthaler, the Netherlands Lion Dollar (also called the Leeuwendaalder) was one of the most popular silver coins in international trade for nearly two centuries. Smaller and easier to transport than traditional silver currency of that age, the Lion Dollar made its home in the Netherlands, North America and around the world. This 1640 silver coin received the Genuine Circulated designation from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation(NGC).

The Lion Dollar and a growing revolt

From 1568 to 1648, seventeen Dutch provinces battled Spanish rule under Philip II in their quest for independence. The Lion Dollar was designed and minted, first in the Holland province and subsequently in six other Dutch Mints, to provide a desirable silver currency to strengthen trade across the Netherlands and between the Dutch United Provinces and the world. Its popularity eventually surpassed that of the Joachimsthaler that served as its inspiration, and the daalder name later inspired the naming of the American dollar.

The obverse of the coin depicts a Dutch knight with a shield featuring a rampant lion. The rampant lion was a proud Dutch symbol also found on the second Dutch coat of arms. Between two circles of beading, the obverse also features the inscriptions "MO. ARG. PRO. CONFOE. BELG. GEL.," which are believed to be translated as "MONETA ARGENTEA PROVINCIARUM CONFOEDERATUM BELGICARUM" (Silver money of the Province of the Netherlands Confederation) along with "GEL" which stands for Gelderland, the Dutch Mint that struck this historic coin. The reverse of the coin features a larger rampant lion along with the motto of the Dutch United Provinces, "CONFIDENS. DNO. NON. MOVETVR" (who trusts in the Lord is not moved) with the date "1640."
