Description

Why purchase this About Uncirculated Silver 3 Kreuzer coin of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I?

Leopold I was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1658-1705. Leopold is best remembered for the genetic defect known as mandibular prognathism, a facial deformity in which the lower jaw extends further than the upper piece. Imagery on this 3 Kreuzer coin of Leopold is generally thought to be an exaggeration of the Emperor’s actual profile, and also thought to be the source of his nickname, “The Hogmouth.”

Distinctive Profile Portrait

Featured on the obverse is the wreathed bust of Leopold, clearly depicting his unfortunate lower jaw. Inscribed “LEOPOLDVS.D.G.R.I.S.A.G.H.B.R.,” translating to, “Leopold, by the Grace of God, Emperor of the Romans, always August, King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia.”

The reverse displays the Imperial Double Eagle, the symbol for the Holy Roman Empire and the Habsburg coat of arms, surrounded by Latin inscriptions with the date and titles held by Leopold.
