Ferdinand II ascended to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire in 1619. A devout Catholic, Ferdinand's effort to restore Catholicism as the only religion of the Empire led to the Thirty Years' War, the final conflict of the Counter-Reformation. This approximately 20 mm diameter Silver 3 Kreuzer coin of Ferdinand II was minted in Vienna, 1624.
Iconic Imperial Design
The obverse features the image of Ferdinand II, wearing the ruffled style collar popular in the Medieval period. Inscribed "FERDI II D G R I S A G H B REX," meaning "Ferdinand II, by the Grace of God, Emperor of the Romans, always August, King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia." Mint mark of Vienna in a circle within the legend.
A double-headed Imperial Eagle is illustrated on the reverse; the coin's denomination "3" inscribed below. Additionally inscribed "ARCHID AV D BVR CO TY" (Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Tyrol), with the year of issue represented by "624."
