Why buy this Shipwreck Effect 1556-1622 Spain 4 Reales Silver Coin from the wreck of the Sao Jose?
In 2005, a marine archaeology company based in Portugal discovered the wreck of the Sao Jose. This was a Portuguese ship that sank in 1622. From 1622 to 2005 it remained undisturbed on the bottom of the Mozambique Channel. The coin shown here is a 4 Reales silver piece issued by Spain. It was minted between 1556 and 1622.
Classic four Reales design
Originally, the obverse displayed the coat of arms used by Spain. However, this coin's time underwater has smoothed over many of the details. This side also showed the Mint mark and face value.
The date was located on the reverse. The remains of a quartered design can be seen here.
Shipwreck Effect from NGC
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was selected to grade and encapsulate this Spanish coin. Due to its centuries underwater and the visible result of that time, this coin was given the Shipwreck Effect designation. It was verified as an authentic coin that was recovered from the wreck of the Sao Jose.
