Why Make This AU53 1525-1569 Prussia Albert of Brandenburg Silver Groschen the Next Addition to Your Collection?

The Reformation began in 1517 with the posting of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. This work by Luther started a long conflict that would also come to be known as a critical time in European history. The silver groschen shown here was issued by Prussia between 1525 and 1569. The man depicted on the obverse had a copy of the 95 Theses delivered directly to him.

Detailed Portrait of Albrecht von Brandenburg

The man depicted on the obverse is Albrecht von Brandenburg or Albert of Brandenburg. His sale of indulgences was a contributing factor to Luther's writing of the 95 Theses. The date can be seen above his portrait to the left.

The reverse shows an eagle with a crowned shield over its chest. The outer ring of the design is filled with inscriptions including a legend and the country of issue.
