Why add this 1279-1307 Edward I Silver Penny to your collection?

Edward I of the House of Plantagenet, was the King of England form 1279 until 1307. During his reign, a new style of the "long cross" penny was introduced. With the new design, the cross extended to the edge of the coin as a deterrent to the practice of "clipping," the debasement of coinage by removal of a small portion of its edge. The long cross also allowed for easy change: cut in half it was valued at a half penny, while a quarter of the coin was valued as a farthing.

  • This Silver Penny was hand struck during the reign of Edward I, 1279-1307.
  • The coin is a product of The Royal Mint, which was established in 886 AD.
  • The hand struck coin features a diameter measurement of approximately 19 mm.

Design of Edward I's Silver Penny

Obverse: The obverse features a forward facing crowned portrait of Edward I. The image is encircled by the inscription "EDW R ANGL DNS HYB," which is an abbreviation for "Edward King of England Lord of Ireland."

Reverse: On the reverse, a Latin inscription which names the issuing city surrounds the depiction of a long cross with slightly flared arms, a heraldic style known as a cross Moline, with three circular pellets located between each arm of the cross.

Graded Very Fine 20

This 1279-1307 Edward I Silver Penny has been authenticated and awarded the grade of Very Fine (VF20) by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This medieval circulated coin shows obvious, but even wear across its obverse and reverse surfaces, with some definition of design detail, particularly in the most recessed areas of the images. The coin is presented in a NGC protective holder with a certification label.
