Why does this 1279-1307 England Canterbury Edward I Treasure Silver Penny belong in your collection?

Edward I was an English King from the House of Plantagenet. During his reign, from 1279 until 1307, Edward is credited with the restoration of royal authority lost under his father's chaotic rule, and the establishment of Parliament as a permanent governing body. He made changes to the design of the silver penny to discourage the debasement practice of "clipping." The coin's ingenious long cross design also enabled fair change, as the coin could be cut into halves or quarters along the lines of the cross to create pieces valued at a half penny or a farthing.

  • This English Penny was hand struck during the reign of Edward I, 1279-1307.
  • The coin was crafted from silver at the Canterbury Mint.
  • The coin measures approximately 19 mm in diameter.

Design of the Silver Canterbury Penny

Obverse: A forward facing, crowned image of King Edward I is featured on the obverse. The inscription "EDW R ANGL DNS HYB" represents his royal title of "Edward King of England Lord of Ireland."

Reverse: The reverse features a circular frame overlapped by a long cross Moline (a heraldic Christian style) at the center, with three pellets in each quadrant. The image is surrounded by the inscription "CIVITAS CANTOR," which is Latin for "City of Canterbury."
