Why make this 1279-1307 Edward I Silver Canterbury Penny a part of your precious metals collection?

Edward I was the King of England from 1279 until 1307. In an effort to re-establish royal authority following the disordered reign of his father Henry III, Edward sought to restore public confidence with improvements in design and purity of the kingdom's coinage. The groat (4 pence), the half penny and the farthing were introduced to supplement the existing penny. The penny itself was modified in design to feature a "long cross" so that the debasement act of "clipping" would be more easily detected and thwarted.

  • This Silver Penny was produced during the reign of Edward I at the Canterbury Mint.
  • The coin features the innovative long cross design.
  • Measuring approximately 19 mm in diameter, the coin was hand struck.

The Edward I Silver Penny Design

Obverse: The obverse depicts Edward I facing forward, bedecked in a royal crown, encircled by a beaded border and the inscription "EDW R ANGL DNS HYB," meaning "Edward King of England Lord of Ireland."

Reverse: The reverse features a long, Moline heraldic style cross, with a cluster of three pellets between each arm of the cross. The image is framed by a beaded border accompanied the Latin legend "CIVITAS CANTOR," which translates as "City of Canterbury."
