Why purchase this 1279-1307 Edward I England Canterbury Treasure Silver Penny?

Collectors looking for a piece from the reign of one of the most consequential reigns of an English king would do well to pick up this penny. This was the largest coin issued at the time for general use. It was easily divisible into halves, or "halfpennies," and "farthings," a quarter of a penny. Edward I was known for expelling Jews from England after stealing their money and property and for his brutal treatment of the Scottish people. He also made Parliament a permanent institution.

  • This coin was 1 penny pound sterling legal tender.
  • It was struck during the reign of Edward I.
  • The Silver Penny was the largest coin issued for regular use during Edward I's reign.
  • The coin was issued between 1279-1307.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin is in Almost Uncirculated 53 condition.

Striking King Edward I Design

Obverse: The coin's obverse bears a crowned portrait of King Edward I. His effigy is encircled by his royal title. The translation of that title is "Edward King of England Lord of Ireland."

Reverse: A cross moline intersects at the center of the reverse. It has pellets in its angles. An inscription along the rim notes its mint of origin.

Beautifully Preserved AU53

This coin received an Almost Uncirculated 53 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that the coin has slight wear on more than half of the design. It retains full details save for slight softness on the high points.
