Why does this 1279-1307 England Edward I Silver Penny deserve a place in your collection?

The reign of House of Plantagenet King Edward I, from 1279-1307, is characterized by changes in administration practices, law, royal authority and coinage. With very little change to the penny design in more than 500 years, Edward's vision to improve the design and fineness of coinage helped strengthen the economy of England. The new "long cross" design turned out to be an innovative tool for deterring "clipping," which had been a means for debasing coinage for centuries.

  • This silver penny of Edward I was struck by hand.
  • The coin is product of the Canterbury Mint.
  • The coin features a diameter of approximately 19 mm and a weight of about 1.45 grams.

Impressive Silver Penny Design

Obverse: Centered on the obverse is a crowned portrait of Edward I. A double beaded border surrounds the forward facing image containing the Latin text "EDW R ANGL DNS HYB," which means "Edward King of England Lord of Ireland."

Reverse: On the reverse, the inscription "CIVITAS CANTOR" is interrupted by the long arms of a cross Moline (a heraldic Christian style emblem), with three pellets located between each arm. Translated from the Latin as "City of Canterbury," the inscription serves as the coin's Mint mark.

Authenticated Silver Penny of King Edward I

This 1279-1307 England Canterbury Edward I Treasure Silver Penny earned the grade of Fine (F) from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The coin also received the "Details" designation, which indicates the presence of characteristics that prevent the coin from receiving a numeric grade. In this case, there is evidence that the coin has been cleaned. The coin is presented in a labeled NGC protective holder.
