Why add this 1268-1413 Italy Silver Grosso struck in Renaissance Venice to your collection?

Doge Enrico Dandolo introduced the Venetian Silver Grosso in 1193, the design of which remained unchanged for several centuries. In fact, the coronation oath of the Venetian Doge included a caveat that the design of the coin could not be altered without council authorization. The Grosso was struck from .985 fine silver, which was the purest silver in production at the time. This coin was minted in Renaissance Venice, 1268-1413, with a diameter measuring 19-21 mm and a weight of 2.18 grams.

Traditional Design of the Venetian Silver Grosso

The standing figures of the ruling Doge and Saint Mark the Evangelist, the patron of Venice, adorn the obverse, surrounded by inscriptions that include the Doge's name and title, along with "S. M. VENETI," which represents "Saint Mark of Venice."

Christ seated on a throne is illustrated on the reverse, with the inscription "IC IX." Around 1400, the inscription was altered to "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."

NGC Extremely Fine 40

Graded Extremely Fine (XF) 40 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this Silver Grosso of the Venetian Republic will exhibit a fully detailed design and overall sharpness, with slight flattening on most of the highest design elements. The coin is presented in a protective holder which includes an NGC certification label, and packaged in a Story Vault case with a brief history of Renaissance Venice.
