Why purchase this 1268-1413 Silver Grosso of the Italian Renaissance?

Introduced in 1193, the Venetian Grosso was one of the most heavily circulated coins during the era of the Italian Renaissance, its high silver content and purity of .985 fine resulted in its wide acceptance outside of Venice. Minted under the authority of the Venetian Doge, this 1268-1413 Silver Grosso measures 19-21 mm in diameter, with a weight of about 2.18 grams.

Intricately Detailed Venetian Design

A pair of figures adorns the obverse, one representing the ruling Doge, the other depicting Venice's patron Saint Mark, an image inspired by the Doge's seal. Inscribed "DVX" (Doge title), the name of the ruling Doge and "S. M. VENETI," Saint Mark of Venice.

The nimbate image of Christ is located on the reverse, seated upon an intricate throne, holding the gospels. Inscribed with the Greek abbreviation of Christ's name "IC IX" or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
