Why add this 1268-1413 Italian Renaissance Silver Grosso of Venice depicting the image of Christ to your collection?

The Silver Grosso was the large penny of the Venetian Republic, originally introduced by Doge Enrico Dandolo in 1193. The coin is also sometimes called a Matapan, which is a Muslim term that references the seated figure depicted on the reverse. This Grosso was struck from .985 fine silver between the years 1268 and 1413.

Classic Byzantine Inspired Design

The reverse image is similar to that of the Byzantine gold histamenon, depicting Christ, nimbate, seated on an ornamented throne facing forward.

The ruling Doge is featured on the obverse, receiving a Gonfalone from Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice. The Gonfalone is a heraldic banner which hangs vertically from a long staff, used in official ceremonies. Inscriptions include the names of the issuing Doge and Saint Mark.
