Why purchase this Renaissance-style 1268-1413 Silver Grosso of the Venetian Republic?

Renaissance Venice was ruled by a Doge, who was elected to the life-term position by the aristocracy of the city-state. The Grosso issued by the city-state was standardized in design, with only the name of the issuer changed. In the early 13th century, the Doge's coronation oath was modified to include a promise that coinage design would remain unaltered. Struck from .985 fine silver in Venice, 1268-1413, this Grosso measures 19-21 mm in diameter.

Design of the Venetian Silver Grosso

The Doge appears on the obverse beside Saint Mark the Evangelist, who is presenting the Doge with a Gonfalone (heraldic banner). Inscriptions include "DVX" (Doge title), the name of the ruling Doge and "S. M. VENETI," Saint Mark of Venice.

The reverse features the image of Christ seated on an ornate throne, with inscriptions "IC IX" or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
