Why purchase this Silver Grosso struck in Venice during the Italian Renaissance?

The first Venetian Grosso was struck in 1193, under Doge Enrico Dandolo. Grosso produced throughout the Renaissance are standardized in design, but undated; approximate date of minting for the coinage is determined by the inscribed name of the ruling Doge. This Grosso struck 1268-1413, measures 19-21 mm in diameter, with a weight of about 2.18 grams.

Venetian Silver Grosso Imagery

The obverse illustrates two standing figures: on the right, the patron of Venice, Saint Mark the Evangelist, the left, the ruling Doge. Saint Mark holds the gospel while presenting a Gonfalone, a heraldic banner, to the Doge. Inscription names the Doge, along with "DVX," representing his title, and "S. M. VENETI," Saint Mark of Venice.

Christ is depicted on the reverse, seated, beneath the inscription "IC IX," the Greek abbreviation for His name.
