Why purchase this beautiful Mint State Silver Grosso struck during the Italian Renaissance, 1268-1413?

The Silver Grosso was the large penny of the Venetian Republic. Introduced in 1193 by Doge Enrico Dandolo, the coin was struck from .985 fine silver. The high silver content resulted in a frequently circulated coin which was readily accepted in regions outside of Venice. Struck in 1268-1413, this beautifully preserved Grosso measures 19-21 mm in diameter with a weight of approximately 2.18 grams.

Incredibly Detailed Renaissance Style Imagery

The obverse illustrates the scene of Saint Mark the Evangelist, the patron of Venice, presenting the ruling Doge with a heraldic flag (Gonfalone). The image is surrounded by a beaded border and inscribed "S. M. VENETI" (Saint Mark of Venice), along with the Doge's name and title "DVX."

The reverse features a nimbate portrait of Christ enthroned, facing forward, accompanied by the Greek abbreviation for Jesus Christ inscribed as "IC IX," or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
