Why add this coin of the Italian Renaissance struck in the Venetian Republic 1268-1413 to your collection?

During the era of the Renaissance, the Republic of Venice was governed by a Great Council, comprised of the members of Venice's noble families. One member of the council, typically an experienced elder, was elected as Doge, a position held for life equivalent to a Duke. This Venetian Grosso was issued by the ruling Doge, 1268-1413, struck from .985 fine silver.

The obverse depicts the Doge and Saint Mark the Evangelist, Venice's patron saint, standing facing forward, with a heraldic flag between them, accompanied by inscriptions that include the Doge's name and title, along with "S. M. VENETI," which stands for "Saint Mark of Venice."

The reverse illustrates Christ seated on a high backed throne grasping the Gospels, with "IC IX" inscribed above, or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA" encircling.
