Why purchase this Italian Renaissance Silver Grosso?

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Republic of Venice was a major maritime power, its location made it a commercial center for the trade of silk, grain and spices. The city-state was ruled by a Doge, the republic's highest elected official, whose imagery and name appeared on Venetian coinage. This Grosso was struck in Venice, 1268-1413, of .985 fine silver measuring 19-21 mm in diameter.

Classic Design Elements

Venice's patron, Saint Mark the Evangelist, is depicted on the obverse, holding a Gospel and offering a heraldic banner to the Doge on the left. "DVX" (Doge title) is inscribed along the flagstaff; legend names Saint Mark and the Doge.

Christ appears facing forward on the reverse, enthroned and holding the Gospels, with the inscription "IC IX" above. Later issues of the Grosso will include the legend "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
