Why add this Italian Renaissance Silver Grosso minted in the Republic of Venice 1268-1413 to your collection?

The Doge of Venice was the city-state's most senior official, elected for life by the aristocracy, and most often the shrewdest elder in the city. Venetian coinage was traditionally minted with an image representing the Doge. Struck 1268-1413, from .985 fine silver, this Venetian Silver Grosso weighs approximately 2.18 grams with a diameter measuring 19-21 mm.

Classic Venetian Design

The obverse features an image inspired by the seal of the Doge, illustrating the patron saint of Venice, Saint Mark, presenting the Doge with a heraldic banner. Legend includes the Doge's name and "S. M. VENETI" (Saint Mark of Venice), with the "DVX," representing the Doge title, near the flagstaff.

The reverse features the nimbate image of Christ enthroned, with inscriptions "IC IX" or "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
