Why add this coin of the Italian Renaissance, Silver Grosso of 1268-1413 Venice to your collection?

Shortly after taking the oath of Doge of Venice in 1192, Enrico Dandolo introduced the Silver Grosso. The new coin was struck from the purest silver in production at the time, .985 fine, which made it acceptable outside the city-state of Venice. This Grosso was struck during the Renaissance years of 1268-1413 with a weight of about 2.18 grams and a diameter measuring 19-21 mm.

Distinctive Venetian Imagery

A ceremonial scene is depicted on the obverse, illustrating Venice's patron Saint Mark presenting a Gonfalone (heraldic banner on a long staff) to the ruling Doge. Inscriptions surrounding the image include the Doge's name and title, as well as that of Saint Mark.

The robed and nimbate image of Christ is located on the reverse, beneath the inscription "IC IX." Grosso struck around 1400 will include the legend "TIBI LAVS 3 GLORIA."
