The Silver Kookaburra debuted in 1990 and has since become one of the world’s favorite bullion coins. In 2020, the Perth Mint is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a unique obverse that includes a look back at the coin’s original design. Half a million one-ounce coins will be struck, but 10 oz and 1 kg pieces will be made to order. The Perth Mint will also offer varieties of this coin, including High Relief Silver Proof and Gold Proof versions, in 2020.
The coin’s obverse departs from the tradition of featuring only a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as a design. Instead, a portrait of the monarch by Jody Clark is included in a small section at the top. Below is the original Kookaburra design that featured on the 1990 edition of the coin.
The anniversary dates, “1990” and “2020,” are inscribed near the top. Rim inscriptions offer the monarch’s name, “ELIZABETH II,” the coin’s country, “AUSTRALIA,” and its face value.
On the reverse, a kookaburra belts out the loud ‘laugh’ for which it is well known. The bird, which is depicted in left-side profile, is perched upon a corrugated rooftop against a backdrop of a stylized sunrise. The fine detail in the design gives the holder an excellent opportunity to appreciate every aspect of this iconic creature, and the Perth Mint’s famous “P” mint mark is included in the lower left.
The coin’s name, “AUSTRALIAN KOALA,” arches over the image in the rim frame. At the bottom is another inscription that notes the key date, “30TH ANNIVERSARY.” The coin’s weight and purity are noted on the right in smaller font.
