The American Gold Buffalo debuted in 2006. It was issued in part due to the demand among collectors for purer coins than the .9167 fine Gold Eagles, which were first issued in 1986. The Gold Buffalo was the first ever American issued gold coin that was .9999 fine. Collectors took strongly to the series thanks both to its purity and its classic American designs.
Both faces of the coin come from the iconic Buffalo Nickel of James Earle Fraser. On the obverse is a right-side portrait of an aging Native American man. He has distinct facial features and long hair that is braided and tossed over his shoulder. These characteristics combine with feathers at the back of his head to make his heritage immediately clear. Obverse inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” the date, “2020,” and an “F” (Fraser).
The reverse features an American bison in left-side profile. The creature is home to the American plains. Fraser portrayed its massive size through his full use of the available space. Both statutory mottoes, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” are inscribed by the animal. Just below him is the coin’s face value, “$50.” Below that are inscriptions of the coin’s weight and purity, “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.” The name of its country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” is inscribed along the rim at the top.
