This coin was issued by Alphonse Jourdain, who had a fascinating history. He took his name from the River Jordan, in which he was baptized, and after nominally holding other titles became the Count of Toulouse when his step-brother Bertrand died. The county was invited by Guillaume IX in 1114, but Jourdain reconquered it by 1123. Although Pope Callixtus II excommunicated him for expelling the monks of Saint-Gilles, Jourdain joined the Second Crusade. He died in Caesarea, some believe of poisoning.
