Why add this Double Struck Judaea Prutah of Alexander Jannaeus to your ancient coin collection?

The last independent Kingdom of Judaea was ruled by king and high priest Alexander Jannaeus, from 103-76 BC. During his reign, three different types of Bronze Prutah were minted. One was Jewish themed, featuring symbols of the Holy Temple with Hebrew inscriptions. Another was clearly Hellenistic (Greek) in style, depicting an anchor with text confirming Jannaeus as King rather than High Priest. This coin is an example of the third, more mysterious style, featuring the Jewish type intentionally struck over the Greek style coin.

  • This Bronze Prutah of Alexander Jannaeus was struck at the Judaea Mint, 103-76 BC.
  • The coin features an intriguing combination of Jewish and Greek styled designs.
  • The coin has been authenticated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).

Imagery of the Double Struck Prutah

Obverse: The obverse is adorned with the Jewish Holy Temple symbol of a cornucopia and legend declaring Jannaeus as High Priest, struck over the Greek symbol of an anchor, a representation of Jannaeus' fleet of ships.

Reverse: The reverse features a Hebrew inscription surrounded by a wreath, struck over the Greek type design: a star with eight rays.
