Powerful Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: The obverse design was revived for the Silver Eagle series after first appearing on the Walking Liberty half dollar. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the image shows Liberty carrying laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, as she walked toward the left, where the morning sun is emerging from beyond the horizon. Her name, "LIBERTY," joins "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2020" among the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman designed numerous sculptures, many of which are still prominently displayed in American cities. His most famous numismatic contributions were the Walking Liberty half dollar and the Mercury dime.
Reverse: John Mercanti used the Great Seal of the United States as a model for his reverse design. Thirteen stars represent the original states at the top, while an eagle protects a union shield below. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim. John Mercanti is among the most important individuals in modern numismatics. He spent nearly forty years with the US Mint, part of which he spent as its Chief Engraver. Mercanti has designed more medals and coins than anyone else in American history.
