Why order this 1 oz. Silver John F. Kennedy Round?
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy shook America like few other events in its history have. Political supporters and opponents alike mourned the loss of the young leader. To honor the fallen Commander in Chief, the US Mint issued the first Kennedy Half Dollar, a coin that is still issued every year. This round from the Highland Mint is based on that series. It was struck on a 1 oz planchet of .999 fine silver.
Featuring the Iconic President John F. Kennedy Portrait by Gilroy Roberts
The obverse appears almost identical to the obverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar, which was designed by Gilroy Roberts. President Kennedy is depicted in left-side profile with his hair neatly combed. His truncated neck splits an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," while "LIBERTY" and "1964" are inscribed above and below his portrait. The round has a rim frame with the inscription "KENNEDY HALF" that refers to the coin from which this piece's designs were taken.
On the reverse is a modified Presidential Seal. Although there are similarities in concept to the reverse design of the Kennedy Hallf, this round has some substantial differences from that design. An eagle guards a union shield while holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. They represent America's willingness to protect her values and a desire for peace, respectively. Thirteen stars are arranged as a field above the bird's head. An inscription offering the round's weight and purity, "ONE TROY OUNCE 999 FINE SILVER," along the rim largely encircles the image.
