2009 has brought a new masterpiece of a coin to collectors. We are proud to present to you the U.S. Mint's 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 Gold coins. The Mint went to great pains to replicate the original 1907 Ultra High Relief $20 Saint Gaudens design. The diameter of this coin has been made smaller than the other American Eagles to accommodate the thickness necessary for the higher relief of this coin. Relief is a word used to describe the depth of the fields and devices. All of our circulating coinage and many of our other collector coins have a very low relief compared to this coin. The ultra high relief design is what makes this coin stand out from other similar gold coins.
The Mint has only issued these coins in a Mint State finish. However, many of the coins exhibit a semi-prooflike appearance with lightly mirrored fields. A small percentage of the coins, perhaps some of the first coins struck from a new die pair, seem to have deeper and clearer mirrors. Some of these coins have been designated as Prooflike by NGC and PCGS.
