Reverse proof coins are made in the same manner as proof coins in that the dies and planchets (coin blanks) receive special treatment before being used. What makes reverse proof coins different is the location of the frosted 'cameo.' On normal proof coins the raised devices (bust, letters, etc.) are frosted and the fields are in deep mirror contrast to the frosted devices. On a reverse proof, however, the fields are frosted and the devices are polished to adeep mirror finish.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle programs, the U.S. Mint released many special sets in 2006, which included pieces struck in a reverse proof finish. Reverse proofs--coins with frosted fields and mirrored devices--had never before been struck by the Mint. The Reverse Proof $50 Gold Eagles are found ONLY in the 3-Piece Gold Sets which have a strict limit of 10,000 pieces. Of equal importance is the 10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle set released in 2007, which also included a reverse proof 1/2 ounce platinum coin. These sets were issued in December of 2007 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the first release of the Platinum Eagle coins in 1997. The reverse proof coin features a stunning change from the usual Proof Platinum Eagle in that all of the fields are frosted and the head of the Statue of Liberty is in deep mirror contrast to the frosted fields.
To date only the reverse proof 2006 Gold and Silver one ounce Eagles and the 2007 half-ounce Platinum Eagle are the only three reverse proof issues the U.S. Mint has ever released.
