While the U.S. Mint is very careful to produce all coins within strict quality guidelines, the Mint isn't perfect. The Presidential Dollar series posed a special challenge to the mint because of the introduction of edge lettering to this new dollar series. The errors produced by this new process are interesting, scarce, and sometimes valuable. Some of the errors encountered are found here in the Presidential Dollar Errors category. Examples of the errors you will see are:
Missing Edge Lettering: A coin that failed to enter the edge lettering process. The edge will be blank instead of exhibiting the date, mintmark, and motto as would be normal.
Double Edge Lettering: A coin that went through the edge lettering process twice, resulting in doubling, sometimes dramatic, on the edge of the coin.
Inverted Double Edge Lettering: The same process that creates doubled edge lettering except that the coin was flipped before entering the edge lettering process for the second time. The result is a mess of inscriptions facing both directions on the edge of the coin.
Other Errors: All the normal errors found on other coins still applies to Presidential Dollars, such as off-center, broadstruck, struck through, and other errors.
NOTE: As a rule, edge lettering on normal coins can be read facing the obverse or the reverse. The direction in which the lettering faces is not a factor in determining whether a coin is an error.
Recently, the U.S. Mint has gotten much more strict on quality control, and errors are far more scarce than before. When a batch of coins is found to have errors, the entire batch is destroyed. The process that destroys these coins is known as waffle-cancelling. The only waffle cancelled coins to be released have been Missouri quarters and, in much smaller numbers, proof Sacagawea dollars.
