The law that enacted the National Parks quarter program also authorized the production of 5 ounce .999 fine silver coins to be produced that bear the same design as the quarters. Although the design is essentially the same on these 3-inch 5 ounce silver coins, the larger surface area allows for some modification of the details, which makes these already beautiful designs even more stunning!
The National Parks quarter program, designed to run for eleven years (2010-2020), will commemorate a national site emblematic of each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and each U.S. territory (the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). There will be a 5 ounce silver coin issued for each of the designs selected for the National Parks quarter program.
The 2010 National Parks 5 oz. silver coins have very low mintage, which will likely keep premiums very high. They commemorate the first five National Parks in the same order that the parks were founded. They are, Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Yosemite National Park, California, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona and Mount Hood National Park, Oregon.
Called a 'bullion' coin by the Mint, the National Parks 5 ounce silver coins are the first of their weight and size minted by the United States Mint, and are the only silver 'bullion' coins minted other than the American Silver Eagles, which have been in continuous production since 1986.
