In 1997, the U.S. Mint added to their successful American Eagle series, then comprised of Gold and Silver Eagles, with the birth of the American Platinum Eagle. Made of .9995 fine Platinum, the coins were the first in U.S. history to be minted of the highly precious metal, whose value far exceeds that of gold.
To commemorate the success of this series, the U.S. Mint created a special 10th Anniversary set of Platinum Eagle coins. In suit with the other anniversary sets, the 10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle set not only includes a 2007 dated Platinum Eagle half-ounce coin, but also a 2007 Reverse Proof Platinum Eagle coin in the half-ounce size as well. The set was issued in December of 2007.
