Anniversary Eagles

First minted in 1986, Gold and Silver American Eagles have been phenomenally popular among both collectors and investors due to their beauty and precious metal content. Featuring some of the most beautiful designs from classic American coinage--Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty (Silver Eagle, from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar of 1916-1947) and Augustus St. Gaudens' rendition of Liberty and the Capitol (Gold Eagle, from the St. Gaudens $20 Double Eagle of 1907-1933), it's no wonder why a collection of American Eagles looks so impressive.

Over the years since the beginning of the American Eagle program, the United States Mint has issued periodic "Anniversary" sets and coins with special packaging and markings that make the coins contained in these sets different from all of the other coins in their respective series.

To date, a number of different American Eagle Anniversary sets have been issued. They are:

1995: 10th Anniversary Eagle set containing the four different proof Gold Eagles for 1995, and a special W-mintmark Proof Silver Eagle. This 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle looks very similar to its much more common 1995-P Silver Eagle brother, but with only 36,000 pieces minted, it has become the key date to the entir Silver Eagle series. This set came in a special "book-like" holder, much like Prestige Proof sets.
2006: 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle set contains three 2006 dated Silver Eagles. The first is a 2006-W uncirculated "burnished" Silver Eagle minted using a special burnished coin blank. The second coin is a W-mint proof Silver Eagle. The third coin, and the most popular in the set, is a 2006-P "reverse proof" Silver Eagle, which has frosted fields and mirror devices - the opposite (or "reverse") of what one could expect out of most U.S. minted proof coins.
2006: 20th Anniversary Gold Eagle set contains three 2006 dated Gold Eagles. These three coins, much like their silver counterparts, are a 2006-W "Burnished" gold eagle, a 2006-W Proof Gold Eagle, and a 2006-W "Reverse Proof" Gold Eagle.
2006: 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver set contains two one-ounce uncirculated "burnished" coins - a 2006-W Gold Eagle, and a 2006-W Silver Eagle. The individual coins are indistinguishable from the coins issued in the three coin sets.
2007: 10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle set contains two one-half ounce Platinum Eagles dated 2007 - a 2007-W proof Platinum Eagle and a 2007-W "Reverse Proof" Platinum Eagle, which rounds out the three metals to-date in "Reverse Proof" strike.
2011: 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle set contains five coins, all dated 2011: W-mint uncirculated, W-mint Proof, Plain Uncirculated, S-mint uncirculated, and a P-mint "Reverse Proof" coin. The first three coins listed were available through other channels, but the last two were only available in this set.
2012: 75th Anniversary of the San Francisco Mint set is a change in Anniversary Eagles in that the coins are not commemorating the series itself, but a mint that struck them. The two coins in this set are a 2012-S Proof Silver Eagle and a 2012-S "Reverse Proof" silver eagle - only the third in the series, and the first to bear the S mintmark.
