This is the second 2012 issue of the First Spouse Gold program. These coins, minted in one-half ounce of 99.99% fine gold, are among the finest gold coins produced in the United States. Obtaining four-nines fine gold is a difficult and expensive process which is not employed for the production of any other U.S. manufactured gold coin.

This coin honors Frances Cleveland, the first spouse of Grover Cleveland, our 22nd (and 24th) president. To date he is the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms, and she was by his side in the White House throughout both administrations.

Frances Clara Folsom Cleveland Preston was born on June 2, 1864 in Buffalo, New York. She was the daughter of an attorney. She married the 49 year-old Cleveland at the age of 21. He had in-fact been good friends with her father and had known her since she was a baby. They married in a small ceremony in the White House.

Mrs. Cleveland often held social events for working-class women on the lawn of the White House, and such an event was chosen as the design of the reverse of this coin. Frances is seen greeting three other ladies. Partly because of her young age, Frances Cleveland, or “Frankie,” as she was known in the press, was one of the more popular first ladies of the 19th century – only fitting that she would be the only first lady to serve in the white house in two non-consecutive terms.

These coins are minted in quantities according to orders. Mintage figures fluctuate from issue to issue.
