With the filming of the movie 'The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey' New Zealand is known as the home to Middle-earth. To mark this event in cinematic history, New Zealand Post has issued official legal tender commemorative coins from Middle-earth. The coins come in it's original government packaging.
The reverse of this coin shows our unlikely hero, Bilbo Baggins, reading over his "Burglar" contract the 13 dwarves want him to sign before starting the adventure. If you don't know the story the Dwarves are on a mission to win back a great treasure stolen years ago by the dragon Smaug. Before starting their adventure they need one more member and Gandalf the Wizard recommends Bilbo for the job. The Dwarves are skeptical about hiring Bilbo as part of the company but their superstition of having an unlucky number 13 wins and Bilbo becomes hired as their official burglar, a job he has no experience in. Turns out that the dwarves were lucky to hire Bilbo because he becomes a hero and saves the dwarves many times. The rim of the coin features the word 'Middle-earth--New Zealand' in both English and Dwarvish. The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
