The First Spouse Gold series was authorized as a companion series to the Presidential Dollars that began in 2007. Each coin was to be one half ounce of gold and feature a portrait of the wife of the corresponding President. Only a handful of Presidents served in office while being unmarried, James Buchanan being the fourth. This raised a question of what to do for those Presidents. It was decided to use the design of a coin that circulated during their Presidency. For Andrew Jackson, that design is the Coronet Head design that was used on most gold denomination from the late 1830s until the turn of the century. The coin was dubbed 'Buchanan's Liberty.' The First Spouse series busted out in 2007 and was immediately popular at the very beginning of the series. These coins cooled off shortly after as the economy started to take a downturn and gold prices began to rise, but we have seen the series pick back up in popularity with the Liberty Subset coins showing an especially renewed interest because of their beautiful designs. This particular coin came out as the series began to pick back up and resulted in slightly higher mintage than the previous two Liberty coins. The final mintage for this coin was 5,162.
